Blackjack is a game that is played between a dealer and a group of players. The object of the game is to beat the dealer with a hand of cards which has a total that is greater than the total of the dealer’s cards, but does not exceed 21. The game can be played with a single deck or multiple decks (up to eight decks can be used in some Casinos). The value of a hand is the sum of the cards where face cards count as 10, aces count as either 11 or 1, and all other cards are face value.
The hand starts when each player places a bet on the designated place at the table. The dealer then deals the cards from a plastic container called a “shoe”, or by hand if using a single deck. The players and dealer are each dealt two cards, with both cards face up for the player, and one card up, one card down for the dealer. Each player will then make a decision to either hit (draw a card) or to stand (stop drawing). As a player, you can draw cards until you choose to stand or until the hand busts (goes over 21). You can hit or stand on any hand that has a total of 21 or below.
After all of the players have completed their hands, the dealer reveals the “hole card” to the table and then completes the hand according to the house rules. Dealers do not have freedom to make their own decisions, but must abide by very strict rules for when to hit or when to stand. For the most part, the dealer must draw a card if the hand totals 16 or less and must stand if the total of the hand is 17 or more. In some casinos there is also a requirement for the dealer to take a card on a “soft” 17, which is favorable for the casino.

To win, you must beat the dealers hand without going over 21. If the first two cards total 21 (which is a blackjack), and the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack, then you win right away. You lose if your hand “busts”, or if the dealer has a hand that is less than 21 but greater than yours. If you stand on any hand of 21 or less and the dealer “busts”, then you win. If you and the dealer tie, then you “push” and neither of you win. Beating the dealer always pays out even money, with the exception of a blackjack, which normally pays out 3 to 2.
